Harun Farocki — Arbeiter verlassen di Fabrik (Workers leaving the factory)
File under — video

Harun Farocki’s 1995 video charts the history of workers appearing in film across the decades. Starting with the first film ever shot, showing the workers leaving the Lumiere Brothers’ factory, the video essay becomes a tacit expose of a history of employer/employee relations.

As part of a series of events at Grand Union, Birmingham, ‘Pavilion Screening 23/11/11’ brought together work by artists Adrianna Palazzolo, David Spraggs and Tom Crawford. This video can be considered in relation to the following: capitalism, essay, film, history, industry, labour and narration.
